Earlier this year, there was a creation of two Breakthrough teams that are going to work on two different themes that have been coming up repeatedly throughout conversations surrounding the future of the church. One team is focusing on structure/finance and one is focusing on vision and mission.
There’s been a lot of questions about the Breakthrough teams and what exactly they’re deciding and discussing. Well, I hate to break it to you, but they’re not deciding anything. That isn’t the purpose of these teams.
Their goal is to look for information and to find questions that need to be asked and then some answers. That’s what they’re presenting to the board. The question of whether or not to sell the church building has to be part of the conversation as it is one of the multitude of possibilities that needs to be explored.
If this building is no longer financially feasible for us to maintain, then we need to look for alternatives. And if this building no longer supports the vision and mission of the church and becomes a hindrance to us moving toward the vision God is giving us, then we also need to look for alternatives.
But again, these two teams aren’t deciding anything, and no decision is even close to being made about what we’re doing with the church building itself.
In very plain words, there has not been a decision made to sell the church building.
Nor will there be a decision on that for quite some time.
These two teams are at the beginning stages of their discussions and they’re really striving to find their stated purpose, goals, and tasks to do. Which means it’s very hard to report on what discussions are being had because they’re still discerning direction.
Having attended both meetings on and off over the last few months, I can tell you that this church—building and people—are very much loved. And the conversations are energizing and filled with hope for what the future holds. The discussions of each team are quite similar to each other at this stage yet.
What’s been discussed so far?
Building relationships with each other and with those outside of the congregation
Strengthening our vision so that we can come together in unity
Having hope and passion for the work we’re doing
That there is a future for this congregation
There is no blueprint or answers yet
We love the Lord deeply and want to honor the Lord in all that we do
It is one of the goals of these two groups and the board to be as transparent as possible about the conversations being had, and that all decisions will be made by the congregation and not by a small group.
I look forward to hearing more from these groups and the discussions they’re having and how they’ll start to add more voices to the conversations and the hopes and the future of our congregation. I know we have a future here, and like you, I don’t know what that specific future looks like. I just know that we’ll trust God to guide us and lead us.
