Be Fearless

Diving deep into the next sermon series will see us exploring what it means to be afraid and how to live Unafraid. It’s based on the book, Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times by Adam Hamilton.

A lot of the books I’ve read lately have dealt with this understanding of fear and fearlessness. This wasn’t planned by my actually! God works in mysterious ways.

John Lennon says: “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love… all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” Fear isn’t unreasonable, and fear can help motivate us, but it’s through getting closer to fear and being courageous in the face of fear that we really see change and movement happening.

Adam Hamilton writes: “Courage is not the absence of fear; instead, it is doing what you feel you should do, or what you long to do, despite the fear. As you press through your fear, you live a life of courage and hope.”

This is all we’re attempting to do as First Christian Church. We have a whole lot of fears when it comes to the church itself: how will we make our budget and pay our expenses, how will we survive into the next ten years, what will we look like, will my friends still be here, will I still be here?

All of these are reasonable fears to have. The problem is that staying within the realm of fear means that we’re stuck there. And it’s not without courage and hope that we start to overcome that fear and start move in a direction toward living and thriving.

I hope you join us for this new sermon series that will take us through the rest of the summer.
